Why start a compost business? Composting offers multiple benefits. In addition to helping gardeners and farmers grow more and better crops, compost can reduce and filter runoff. It can also prevent nitrates from leaching into groundwater. Most importantly, compost helps soils sequester carbon from the atmosphere. We must stop locking organic materials like food scraps up in landfills or, worse, incinerating them! Let’s compost them!

You can help! YOU can make this happen. I know, because I’ve done it and I continue to do it today. My name is Joe Hoffman. I’ve owned and operated my own food scraps Composting Facility (Hoffman Composting) since 2015. I bought the land, designed and built the facility, got permitted, and grew the business to where I now devote myself to it full-time. I continue to scale up and improve the business because I love it and I recognize that this is a large and long-term mission.

I started this guide because I know that this world needs many people to do the hard work of replenishing our soils with what we currently lose as ‘waste’.
